Healthy Training Treat Recipe

4 cups flour (whole wheat, rye, potato, or soy depending on your dog)

1⁄2 cup flax seed meal (ground fresh is best - use a clean coffee grinder)

1 egg

2 tablespoons smooth peanut butter

1 teaspoon cinnamon

1 small apple, grated

11⁄3 cups water

Preheat oven to 325 degrees.

In a bowl combine all ingredients except the apple and water. Grate apple into mixture and add water. Mix until it starts forming a dough. Turn out on a lightly floured surface and knead well. Roll out to 1⁄4- to 1⁄2-inch thick. Take a straight edge and score the dough horizontally then vertically to make a grid of 1/2-inch squares. Be careful not to cut through the dough completely. Place the dough on a baking sheet that has been sprayed with a nonstick spray. Bake at 325 º F for 45 -60 minutes, to desired chewy or crispness. Break apart and freeze for storage.

Try other fruits such as peaches, pears, or bananas, or dried berries that have been finely chopped. With moister fruits, you may have to decrease the amount of water.
